ON NIGERIA'S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

The standard of the Nigerian educational system is far below required level for any country that is serious about its development. The current statistics are nothing to write home about, with the performance of our students dropping every day in Secondary certificate exams and qualifying exams. The higher institutions are no better, as even the graduates of these institutions bring the quality of the degrees that these institutions award into disrepute by their output.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS (2)

HOW TO REACT TO A FIRE
Try as we might to prevent them, fires can happen in a flash. When they do break out, you need to know how to react.

Here are some suggestions:

  • If you smell smoke or your smoke detectors sound, get your family out immediately. Call the fire department from a neighbor's house.

NATIONS CUP LIST OUT!

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi, Joseph Yobo made Nigeria’s final list as expected to the 2013 Africa Nations Cup starting January 19 in South Africa. They lead 21 others including Ukraine-based Brown Ideye who made the team despite originally being rumoured as cut from the team by coach Stephen Keshi. The Nigeria coached released the final team list while the country engaged Cape Verde in a friendly match in Faro, Portugal Wednesday night. The match ended goalless.

ARE YOU ENJOYING WHAT YOU DO?

This might sound silly, but you should really reflect on this issue. Do you enjoy what you do? Would you rather be doing something else if you had your way? A lot of people you come in contact with would tell you that they are in their current jobs because of the money, or because that was the job they could get at the time.
Infact, in some cases, people study some courses in the university or higher institution because they are the popular ones, or because their parents wanted them to study such courses.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS (1)

Fires can strike anywhere at any time. Along with installing smoke detectors in your home, you should have a fire extinguisher in key areas such as the kitchen, bedrooms, workshop, and garage. Walk your family through a fire drill so everyone knows what to do and where to go in case of fire.
Every room in the house should have at least two escape exits. If one of these is a window from a second story, install ladders that can be dropped from the windows. Make sure children know where the family will reunite if they have to leave the house in case of fire.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

KontriMan is sure that a lot of our folks made new year's resolutions. The new year is here and actually fast gaining momentum and gradually rolling by. How many of us can really say that just after a few days into the new year, we have religiously kept our resolutions? KontriMan is not trying to discourage or judge anyone here with regards to keeping or failing to keep resolutions. Even KontriMan fails to keep some of his resolutions. KontriMan just wants to understand why it is difficult to keep these resolutions after they have been meticulously made. In our opinion, if we can get to the root of the matter, we would be better positioned to live up to our resolutions.
KontriMan awaits your opinions and comments.

AND FIRE GUTS INEC VOTERS' REGISTRY

The fire that recently ravaged the Voter Registry Department of the Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is suspicious. Why was it the Voter’s Registry that got burnt [when the race for 2015 had barely begun]? Why now? While we do not totally rule out the fact that the fire was a possible accident, it is not out of place to speculate that there was more to the fire than met the eyes.

ONLY IN NIGERIA… (3)

Only in Nigeria would an Airline that has not fully resolved compensation issues with the families of those who died in the crash of one of its aircrafts, have its licence restored. The action of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) clearly establishes the fact that we do not fear God and have no sense of human sympathy. What are these people telling the families of those that lost their lives in the crash? As a mark of solidarity, KontriMan calls on well-meaning Nigerians to boycott the Airline, so as to hold these people accountable for their actions or inactions.
May we not become victims of such calamity.

BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS

Last year we recorded a number of fire outbreaks in Nigeria that claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira. KontriMan uses this medium to commiserate with those who lost their loved ones and their properties to the infernos.
However, it is imperative that we use this period to reflect over our attitude to issues bothering on our safety. Prevention they say is better than cure, and so we must always ensure that things are properly and rightly done. Nothing should be taken for granted.
